The i4S laboratory at IIT Mandi focuses on solving real-life problems in civil and aero structures through innovative research and technology. Our research spans multiple domains including structural health monitoring, bridge health management, mass concrete, and new age structures like tensegrity.
Our research is funded by prestigious organizations such as DST, SERB, ARDB, and SJVNL, among others. We collaborate with academic institutions, industry partners, and government agencies to develop practical solutions for complex engineering challenges.
Understanding the effect of temperature and other adverse environmental agents on heritage structures is an important step towards maintaining their health. Victoria Bridge in Mandi town is one such age-old steel suspended bridge that took its test of time. Our group is investigating its current health and expected service life.
Tension+Integrity; a unique structure type that is stable because of the prestress in its tension members. Team i4S is exploring newer ideas for form finding and stability analysis for this structure type. Besides, the variation of its dynamic behaviour under varying temperature is also one of our interest.
Team i4S is developing novel Bayesian Filtering techniques for the identification of complex stochastic systems using noisy response measurements. The application for this research can be health monitoring complex infrastructures using their ambient vibration response.
Robust Bayesian algorithms are one of the team's major interest. In this attempt, noise adaptive algorithms that are robust against measurement outliers and sudden change in the system are developed.
Damping in structural systems is still a mysterious topic for research. Hardly there is any model or estimation technique that can perfectly model/estimate damping in a system. This team is focusing on developing algorithms that can offer efficient model-based estimation that takes basis on estimated damping values.
